Mac Pro officially discontinued with the Mac Studio poised to take over as Apple’s high-end desktop offering

It has been nearly three years since Apple showed off the Mac Pro with an M2 Ultra SoC. While some roadmaps predicted an eventual upgrade, others implied Apple has largely mothballed its full-fat desktop offering. 9to5Mac has now heard from Apple that the Mac Pro has been shuttered indefinitely.

It isn’t surprising, given that Apple has largely put all of its eggs in the Mac Studio basket, with its latest iteration receiving an M3 Ultra upgrade—a SKU that isn’t found on any other Apple computer. Essentially, anyone looking for top-of-the-line performance from Apple products will now have to make do with a Mac Studio.

The M3 Ultra-based Mac Studio already has memory/storage covered for power users by supporting up to 16 TB and 512 GB, respectively. It would be reasonable to assume future iterations will support more, especially an Ultra-branded chip.

Exactly why Apple decided to ditch the Mac Pro entirely is unknown, but its transition to in-house silicon may offer some clues. Despite coming with fully-functional PCIe slots, the last Mac Pro did not support external GPUs. The handful of expansion cards it did support did little to justify its sky-high price tag. And let’s not even get into its supporting wheels.
